Who’s On Top? 10 Favorite Science Fiction and Fantasy Actresses

BY: GURU JAY

Who’s On Top?

Lights… Camera …Action. Welcome to Hollywood. Here’s a place where the stars shine 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The glitz and glamor comes with the territory. Actors walk around like they own the place. But, we all know the actresses run the show.

Who is Brad Pitt without Angelina Jolie? Captain America is a chump without Scarlett Johansson standing beside him. I learned early in life that “behind every great man is a great woman.”

The role of the actress is to bring the character to life. She has to dive into the part like a synchronized swimmer. I admire actresses for their crafts.

If you want to make it in Hollywood, you can’t fear rejection. Rejection is part of the game. Who knows? You might go on 100 auditions and still not get a job.

Don’t give up or get discouraged. Remember the goals you have set. No one said being an actress was easy.

My favorite actresses belong to the science fiction and fantasy genre. Although I love all kinds of movies, fantasy resonates with my idea of an unstoppable movie. In a sense, science fiction is unregulated, unlimited, and unbelievable.

First of all, science fiction and fantasy movies are really hard to produce. Most movies in this genre have enormous budgets. As a result, sometimes you hit; and, sometimes you miss.

I systematically analyze movies. Like a frog, I dissect film and get at the heart of the story. A great movie critiques society.

When I watch movies, I feel like James Brown, ‘good.’ Brown said “this is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a little girl.” Hollywood is an actor’s paradise but it would be nothing without an actress.

Almost all Hollywood actresses are underpaid. Click here to find out who are the highest paid actresses. I admire actresses for their tenacity.

In particular, science fiction and fantasy actresses are the best entertainers in the business. The job of the actress is to take on a new identity. Who steals identities better than a fantasy actress?

Top 10

10. Angelina Jolie

The filmography of Angelina Jolie is impressive. She has a great body of work. Angelina is one of the best actresses on the planet.

Few can compare to her acting talent. Jolie is known for her versatility. She can do just about any role you put in front of her.

It makes sense that show business is in her blood. Her father is of course actor Jon Voight. It is safe to say he taught her well.

I recommend seeing Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. She brings the sexy character to life. But the real reason she is my favorite is because of her performance in Beowulf. Also, she is the lead character in Maleficent.

9. Halle Berry

Halle Berry is the hottest actress over 45. Click here for the Hottest Hollywood Starlets Under 30. Halle is an excellent actress. And, she is also versatile like Angelina.

You can’t ignore her performances in Gothika or the X-Men series. You can read a review of X-Men: Days of Future Past here. I like Halle Berry because she knows how to do sci-fi fantasy the right way.

I’m the first to say Cloud Atlas could have been better. But, Halle was great in the film. Because of her resume, she is my 9th favorite science fiction and fantasy actress.

8. Tricia Helfer

Tricia Helfer takes the elite 8th spot. She was brilliant in Battlestar Galactica. I like her style a lot.

Watch some of her movies. You can easily tell she is well trained. It is always a treat to see Tricia working on the silver screen.

7. Summer Glau

Summer Glau’s work in the Terminator series speaks for itself. Her fans also love her in Firefly and Serenity. She is the cream of the crop in my book.

Summer comes in at number 7. There’s something magnetic about her. I just have to see everything she’s in, because she is so good.

6. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence makes my list because she is on another level in the X-Men series. She is a young actress who doesn’t act her age. Without a doubt she is the best actress of her generation.

5. Gina Torres

Gina Torres earned the 5th spot on my list. Two words describe her placing: Matrix and Firefly. You don’t have a choice but to admire her terrific acting. She is a natural. On her birthday, a star was born.

4. Evangeline Lilly

Evangeline Lilly is number 4. She performs to the highest degree in Lost and The Hobbit. She is my fourth because I believe she is underrated. I usually favor the underdog.

3. Scarlett Johansson

It’s not a consequence I find myself writing about Scarlett Johansson all the time. She is truly one of the best Hollywood has to offer. I follow her career and I see greatness in her path. She is a rare breed.

2. Anna Paquin

Anna Paquin is wonderful in X-Men as Marie/Rogue. They don’t give Academy Awards to just anyone, you know?  Also, Anna Paquin is ranked 2ndfor her excellence in True Blood.

1. Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana is number 1. You can’t ignore the numbers. One word, “Avatar” does not do her justice. Yes, she is Neytiri but she also is Uhura in Star Trek. She was Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean. What Rihanna is to music, Zoe Saldana is to movies.

Zoe is my favorite because she took on some of the greatest roles in cinematic history. The petite actress is already legendary early on in her career. Yes, the list is exhaustive. But, there’s no denying the great work she’s done.

Now you know who’s on top. These actresses don’t get enough credit. This is my tribute to the top 10 science fiction and fantasy actresses.

Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past SPOILER ALERT

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a masterpiece. Go see it. You will love it!

Hugh Jackman takes over as Wolverine. Jennifer Lawrence shines ‘bright like a diamond’ as Mystique. And, James McAvoy steals the show as Professor Xavier.

All in all, the cast is a great ensemble. Michael Fassbender makes his mark as Magneto. And, Evan Peters makes us chuckle with his interpretation of Quicksilver.

You’ll laugh. Maybe, you’ll cry. And, you’ll have fun.

It’s a good family movie. It’s well written. It’s unforgettable.

The beginning of X-Men is like a video game. I call X-Men the video game movie. If you’re a gamer or a comic book collector, this is a must-see.

The X-Men comic strip is all about teamwork. It’s not X-Man. It’s X-Men.

I watch movies with an eagle eye. Not a bird’s eye…not a hawk eye…but an eagle eye. From start to finish, the video game movie is brilliant.

I’m not exaggerating. It is almost perfect. I would have written it a little differently though.

There are some great lines in the film. However, some things could have been said better. The screenwriter should be more concise.

I take my hat off to director Simon Kinberg. I feel he is doing the X-Men franchise justice. I don’t have any complaints.

What is X-Men, really?

There is more to it than meets the eye. Yes, X-Men is a comic strip with a political statement. Yes, X-Men is a movie with an important message.

X-Men are mutants. They are classified as nonhuman. Yet, they are more humane than humans.

You can define them as gifted, supernatural, or a danger. In actuality, they represent a challenge to the status quo. The message is: it’s okay to be different.

Hugh Jackman

As a boy, I grew up loving Wolverine. When I was around eight years old, my sister got me a Wolverine action figure for my birthday. I played the mess out of that toy.

I identify with the Wolverine character. Like me, Wolverine is tough as nails. ‘What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.’

Hugh Jackman is the embodiment of toughness. I remember the first X-Men movie. I said to myself, man that guy Wolverine won’t back down from anything.

Hugh brings Wolverine to life. He is to X-Menwhat Pierce Brosnan was to James Bond. Replacing Jackman is a difficult task.

Jennifer Lawrence

Last year Jennifer Lawrence was the 2nd highest paid actress behind Angelina Jolie. This year I think she’s number 1. We’ll have to wait and see.

Like her character Mystique, Jennifer Lawrence is virtually unstoppable. You can get in her head all you want (Professor Xavier), but she is determined to stop Bolivar Trask by all means. X-Men allowed Jennifer to demonstrate her superpowers on the silver screen.

You’ll love Jennifer Lawrence after seeing this movie. She takes on the hardest role and plays it easily. She is my de-facto choice for best leading actress.

James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart

Teamwork takes synergy. James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart both play Professor Xavier. I think that their synergy is damn near perfect.

Give credit to the casting department here. They found the right man for the job. The actors complement each other.

McAvoy is the past and Stewart is the future. Wolverine travels back to the 1970’s to find the X-Men crew. He has to convince Professor Xavier and the others to join forces.

Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen

Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen are the antagonists. They play Magneto. The moral of Magneto is, we are our own worst enemies.

Michael and Ian are in perfect harmony. It’s rare to see two movie stars in sync. They have you guessing the whole time.

This character is unpredictable. He keeps you in suspense. You don’t know what to expect from him.

The Plot Thickens

Magneto is imprisoned at the Pentagon for killing JFK. Wolverine and the X-Men plot to break him out. It doesn’t go smoothly.

At one point, they are trapped. The fun starts here. You’ll have to see it for yourself.

This scene is a work of art. The spotlight shines on Evan Peters. Quicksilver uses his abilities to the core. This is the highlight of the movie.

Time is the underlying theme. While Wolverine travels back in time, the X-Men are on edge. He’s the last hope.

The world has been tormented by war. Peace is not anywhere in sight. But, where there’s a will there’s a way.

X-Men is the best! “I’ll try my best. Your Best is enough.” That’s one of my favorite lines from the film.

Go see X-Men if you want an action-packed and futuristic motion picture. It takes cinema to the next level. The plot thickens.

X-Men: The Video Game Movie

I vouch for X-Men. It’s in a class of its own. The stars gave 110 percent.

My only issue with the acting is Ellen Page. I understand why they chose her. But, I feel she overacted.

Don’t get me wrong, I like her. However, I would have selected someone like Emma Stone. That’s my opinion. Take it for what it’s worth.

Have you seen any other X-Men films? I liked X-Men First Class. Click here for more information about the whole franchise. I look forward to a video game.

The film is visually pleasing. If you’re hard to please, you’ll love this because the producers make it look easy. It’s the best movie that’s now playing.

I give X-Men: Days of Future Past 5 stars. It is the best. You are the best. Thank you for reading and sharing. I appreciate your comments and questions.
