Emmys 2017 Recap

Did you watch the Emmys last night? The 2017 Emmys was exciting. All the stars gathered on the red carpet and then on stage.
It was truly a wonderful time. Are you going to watch the post show? In the meantime, read this recap.

Did you check out the fashion and styles? Who was the best dressed in your opinion? Some say Zoe Kravitz was the most fashionable. Apparently, risque is in and safe is out.
To begin with, glitz and glamor obviously filled the concert hall. Along with excitement, there was also a lot of humor in the room. However, Jimmy Fallon was noticeably absent. Still, there was so much comedy to behold.
The Emmys celebrate TV at its best. It is important to acknowledge the contributions of writers, actors, directors, producers and the crew. Making great television is a concerted effort.
The 69thPrimeTime Emmy collected talent like bottle caps. Did you see the opening montage? Stephen Colbert began the night singing and dancing like he was on a Broadway musical.
There were so many highlights of the show. What did you like the best? Maybe, you enjoyed every minute of it. Was this the best award show or what?
My favorite moment was the coming together of TV rivals James Corden and Seth Meyers. I also enjoyed the Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel drinking segment. They were “sore” losers. Again, where was Jimmy Fallon? How amazing would it be to get every last one of them in the same room at the same time?
More emphasis should be placed on the red carpet and after party. The Emmys should be shortened to make way for the red carpet and post show. Anyway, the presenters did a fantastic job.
And the Winners Are…
HBO, ABC, Netflix and Hulu were big winners. John Lithgow received the first award. Veep and Atlanta won multiple times. Sterling K. Brown won for This Is Us. Plus, Elisabeth Moss took home a statute for Handmaid’s Tale
Overall, it was Handmaid’s Tale’s night. It is unfortunate that TV’s number one show was ineligible for nomination. In fact, no Game of Thrones‘ cast members were in attendance. Who was your favorite winner? Were your favorite shows nominated?
To wrap it up, next year will be even more exciting.

Who Do You Choose? James Corden Vs. Seth Meyers

BY: GURU JAY

Who do you watch late at night? After Jimmy Fallon, Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Seth Meyers comes on.  How can you watch both at the same time?  Who do you choose? It depends on what you want.
Go with James Corden for pure entertainment. He offers the full package. However, if you want some spin with your ride, Seth is the one.  Do I sound like a car salesman? That’s the point.

Picture buying a brand new set of wheels off my dealership…The James Corden or the Seth Meyers. They both provide premium entertainment at an affordable cost.

I remember the very first Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Stevie Wonder was behind the steering wheel getting ready to drive. I’ve always been wonderful and from then on I became a James Corden fan.

The comedic actor’s performance in Begin Again was noteworthy. I also like how on The Late Late Show he calls everybody out at the same time plus his tag line “And this is The Late Late Show.”  I used to blog “This is the Guru Jay” when I first started.

Now, Seth Meyers handles his business. Having Fred Armisen play in the band was a brilliant move.  Bobby Fischer couldn’t make a bolder opening.

Seth Meyers uses satire like trash bags. He always throws away a joke. His Saturday Night Live days prepared him well.  I think he’s a better interviewer than James Corden.

But I feel JC is the best comedian. That’s saying a lot because I used to be more familiar with Seth.  And I love SNL like baseball. Who do I choose?

Entertainment-wise my first choice is James Corden. His show defines variety. He doesn’t have an issue with doing it all. On the flip side, I feel Myers specializes in political humor. Guess who majored in political science?

Does Seth Meyers remind you of Alex Keaton/ Michael J. Fox from Family Ties? At the end of the day it’s all about sense of humor. Both celebrities have sharp senses. Kinda cheesy?

Who’s Watching? Jimmy Kimmel Vs. Jimmy Fallon

BY: GURU JAY

Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t go on live, though they call his show Jimmy Kimmel Live. Imagine Saturday Night Live prerecording episodes. Despite this misleading title, I shamefully watch Kimmel more often than the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Overall, Kimmel built a better platform because the offbeat comedian surrounds himself with terrific talents from Cousin Sal to Guillermo to Matt Damon. Fallon works harder and relies on himself more than others. Sometimes, Fallon seems exhausted as if he’s burning out like birthday candles in Antarctica.
Kimmel’s sense of humor is more sustaining, although Fallon is the most entertaining  What will happen when Stephen Colbert takes over after David Letterman? Can Colbert compete with awaken forces Fat Jimmy and Slim Jim? Who’s ratings will nosedive?

From this point forward I’ll occasionally address Kimmel as Big Jimmy and Fallon as Slim Jim. Big Jimmy built his show from scratch, while Slim Jim took part of a hostile takeover. Conan O’Brien should have been bigger than Johnny Carson. Is that the real reason why Jay Leno stalled Conan’s initiation ruining the Tonight show’s ratings and standing?

I understand Conan has a huge ego, but Colbert’s ego isn’t any larger. O’Brien was simply the best. In fact, Conan was ABC’s worst nightmare.
Slim Jim is highly creative and wildly talented. But Fallon took a shortcut on the roads to riches- road blocking Conan O’Brien. NBC’s executives have made disgusting decisions. Although Fallon serves as a wonderful host, look at how this network treated past hosts and tell me if Slim Jim won’t get eaten alive.
In the end, Big Jimmy is victorious because he’s well established in Hollywood. The real debate is whether the new CBS Late Show with Stephen Colbert can put the Tonight Show to bed. While I’m a Jimmy Fallon fan, I won’t watch NBC until they act right.

Who’s Watching? Daytime Talk Vs. Late Night TV Shows

BY: GURU JAY

Ellen DeGeneres dominates Day Time Talk Show TV.  She is in a league of her own. Hey Ellen, save the last dance for me.

I love Ellen DeGeneres for her style and substance. She has good intentions. I get the feeling Ellen genuinely cares about her audience.

She is committed to her craft. I imagine her crew has nothing negative to say toward her. Ellen’s appeal reminds me of Oprah.

What is more, Hollywood respects her. Why else would they beg her to host the Oscars again? Ellen has had a long and prosperous career.

Really, she shows no signs of slowing down. She has a monopoly on her time slot. At the end of the day, I think she is so successful because she is down-to-earth.

Humility is her middle name. To be on the air more than a decade is a tremendous achievement. What is extraordinary with Ellen is her sheer brilliance at connecting to the audience.

She stays out of trouble. So she doesn’t have P.R. problems. Everybody wants to be on the Ellen show.

They should change the show’s name to Everybody Loves Ellen. She deserves an in-depth article on The Guru Jay Blog.Day Time Talk TV is nothing without Ellen

Ellen blows the competition out the water like ducks. Who can challenge the Daytime Talk Show host? She stands alone in the crowd as a cougar among domestic cats.

If you want to survive you need a big meow. Also, you shouldn’t waste your time barking up the wrong tree. Whose talk show do you like?

Do you enjoy the cooking shows? The perky Rachael Ray reminds me of a younger Martha Stewart. She’s a sight to look at and can cook her ass off.

I like Rachael because she is properly positioned as an elite chef.  Comparing her show to the Chew is no contest. First of all, like Ellen, Rachael is the captain of her ship. She doesn’t need an entourage to surround her in the kitchen.

Don’t twist my words. I’m not knocking the Chew. But, it’s unfair to put the Chew cast and Rachael Ray in the same weight class.

Here’s why: they’re playing two different sports. Hear me out. Tennis, golf and boxing are individual sports, whereas: football, basketball and baseball are team sports.

As a proud American, I admire rugged individualism. Still, variety is great.

Does anyone know what happened to Emeril Lagasse? The Big “Bam” Theory replaced him.

I digress. The point is we want competition because it forces us to do better…to be the best.

Dr. Phil is America’s psychiatrist. He dominates his market share. Of course, Oprah introduced him to the world 16 years ago.  She played a major role in discovering Dr. Oz as well.

Here is an interesting article from ABC News. The story shows how Oprah made stars such as: Suze Orman, Nate Berkus and Iyanla Vanzant famous. This is more proof Oprah is a huge influencer inside and outside of Hollywood.

I can’t gloss over Maury and Jerry Springer These shows live on the cutting edge. They cater to an underserved population. They have lasted longer than expected.

My mom tells me the real reason is because they have easy jobs. People eat it up for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Check out these shocking ratings

Entertainment is Funny Show BusinessCrazy antics make mad money. Who’s watching?

It seems Day Time Talk TV has gone to the dogs. Late Night television is way more interesting.  It’s like the Wild West.

Arsenio Hall just got thrown into the mix. His show has been renewed for a second season. I’m sure he’s the worst nightmare of ABC and NBC.

Also, it appears Chelsea Lately is ending after seven seasons. Although I disagree with Chelsea Handler, I do feel we need a woman in this time slot.

Here’s an idea. Why not let Ellen DeGeneres produce a late show? She’s a good judge of talent. And, she is well connected.

Giving Ellen executive control is a win-win proposition. But, be warned! Late night television is a dangerous game.

I used to be a big fan of Conan O’Brien. I thought Jay Leno shanked him. I was wrong.

After watching O’Brien’s documentary, I now see that his big ego got in the way. He didn’t want to compromise. I was surprised to see how it all developed.

Furthermore, NBC is fully responsible for the Tonight Show travesty between Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. They played the two against each other like pawns.

Late night television hosts have to swim with sharks. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert will square off starting next year.  David Letterman will go out on top

Letterman chose a perfect time to retire. Colbert will come in and instantly cause problems for the two Jimmies. Late night ratings will spiral out of control.

I predict a steady decline of Jimmy Kimmel Live (JKL). Jimmy K. is good but he needs to be great. Here’s my rationale…

The Tonight Show with Fallon is only growing.  JKL is an old institution. Plus, the skinny Jimmy appeals to a much younger audience.

The arrival of Colbert will hurt the fat Jimmy more than the skinny. If I stand correct, the Tonight Show will beat the Late Show. And, the Late Show will beat the “Live” Show.

By the way, JKL is not a live event at all. Jimmy Kimmel Live is deceiving. If you ask me, it is false advertising.

We love live events. That’s why sports are so successful on TV. That’s why Larry King lasted 100 years on CNN

So I suggest ABC change their late night show name. I still believe in Jimmy Kimmel’s star power. Ever since The Man Show he has always been associated with greatness.

Why am I mad? Well, what if Saturday Night Live taped their show on Monday morning? Now, do you understand?

JKL must adapt and reinvent in order to stay on top of the food chain. Act now before it’s too late. Otherwise, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert will be the new Coke and Pepsi.

In the words of the Most Interesting Man in the World, stay thirsty my friends.
