Top 2020 New TV Shows

TV is huge. There is so much to watch. Where do we start? Apple TV, Hulu, Disney+, Netflix, Starz, HBO, Showtime, ABC, NBC, Fox- come on, the options are endless. There are so many ways to go with this. We can argue about what’s better. Or we can look at the ratings, which only tell half of the story. We can talk about the best show on Hulu and Netflix. Is The Handmaid’s Tale Hulu’s best?

The Show Must Go On

The year is almost over; and, now is a good time to do some reflection. Saying the best TV is behind us is a matter of opinion. The best TV could be in front of us. So what there is no more Game of Thrones and Big Bang Theory, there are still other choices. Here are the top 2020 TV shows, along with commentary. Here’s to watching and binge-watching only the best episodes!

  • Lovecraft Country

Out with the old, in with the new. For this list, we only will discuss the top 2020 shows. We start with the Lovecraft Country. What is there to say about a book-based show? You know that it is going to be good. Jurnee Smollett is making a name for herself in the drama series. Beginning in August with six episodes and counting, the HBO show is becoming very popular.

  • Next

This show makes our cut because the algorithms dictate it. The Fox TV show about artificial intelligence is the definition of brand new. Fox aired the pilot episode on October 6, 2020. They have high hopes for the science-fiction show as Next has a big budget, fine cast, and top crew.

  • Ghost

Creating this list is hard because we decide what we write about and what we discard–that’s power. Choosing Ghost is a no-brainer because the Starz crime drama is a spin-off of one of the most successful shows on TV ever (Power). Created by Courtney A. Kemp, this series is in it for the long haul. Plus, Michael Rainey has potential as the lead actor. Coming back in December, fans can’t wait to see how season 1 concludes.

  • The Great

There is something for everybody on TV. Those with a dark sense of humor will find watching The Great enjoyable. Based loosely on Russian history, Elle Fanning plays a fictional Catherine II. Debuting in May 2020, this Hulu show received an Emmy nomination. It ultimately lost to Schitt$ Creek.

  • Normal People

This Hulu drama series is novel-based. There is a lot to say about a show based on a book. It is simply the best. Little Fires Everywhere is an honorable mention in this category.

  • Hollywood

This Netflix original is all about Hollywood. What could go wrong? We can choose to watch or binge-watch everything. There are a total of 7 episodes in the miniseries. Plus, it is high-budget.

  • Raised by Wolves

Ridley Scott does a fine job producing Raised by Wolves. His credit as an executive producer helps drive the show to success.  Recently, HBO renewed the show. Created by Aaron Guzikowski, HBO just renewed Raised by Wolves for a second season. There are great things in store for this science fiction show. Wait and see.

  • Away

Another Netflix original, Away, is about humans exploring Mars. The cast, especially Hilary Swank, is exceptional. Debuting in September 2020, Away is not too far off the mark. The cinematography of the series is incredible. Hopefully, another season is in the works.

  • The Good Lord Bird

Starring Ethan Hawke, The Good Lord Bird is taking over Showtime. The pilot episode debuted on October 4, 2020. Expect another episode soon. It shouldn’t get canceled because the show has all the right ingredients. What more could we want?

  • Emily in Paris

Last but not least, this show makes the final cut. Netflix released this brand new show last week. Motion pictures set in Paris have a good reputation. The highly-rated Emily in Paris is taking on the world. How long will the excitement last?

There are a lot of new TV shows to discuss. Some of them will get canceled for multiple reasons. Fortunately, there are enough TV shows to keep us happy. We could have mentioned more, but ten is a wholesome number. Let’s keep watching and binge-watching only the best because our time is valuable.

Is Liam Neeson a Top 10 Actor?

BY: GURU JAY

Is Liam Neeson a Top 10 Actor?

What do you feel are the best Liam Neeson movies? If you had to choose just one, would you choose Taken? Maybe, you would choose The Commuter because the film is more recent. If Keanu Reeves is unstoppable, so too is Liam Neeson. Have you seen Non-Stop?

Non-Stop is easily one of Liam Neeson’s best movies. At any rate, Liam Neeson is still making great movies. Plus, Liam Neeson is a premium actor.
I argue that Liam Neeson is one of the greatest actors of his generation. He’s done enough in his career to be honored for his greatness. Where is his place in Hollywood history? How far atop the totem pole do you rank the movie star all time?

Before we begin ranking movie stars, it is important to understand the ranking system. The ranking system contains opinions. Your opinions are valuable. Additionally, the critics love Liam Neeson. His movies consistently receive high marks and open big at the box office.
Liam Neeson was born in Ireland in 1952. I consider him the Irish Tom Hanks. If he’s starring in a movie, you want to watch it. He has an impressive filmography. As you will soon find out, he is a bankable star like Sandra Bullock.
I predict Cold Pursuit will have a strong opening at the box office. The movie appears to capture the magnitude of his acting skills. Liam Neeson is a very versatile actor. Neeson is no stranger to the spotlight. The celebrity has built a durable brand over his career.
Check out Liam Neeson movies on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and Netflix. Watch clips on YouTube and Google “Liam Neeson.” Read his Wikipedia page when you have time. You’ll find he is an interesting man. Without question, Liam Neeson is just as fascinating onscreen as he is in real life.

2019 Oscars Predictions

2019 Oscars Predictions

The Oscars are upon us. The 2019 nominees are in. And there isn’t a host for the show. But I expect a fun atmosphere and some surprises. There are a lot of questions and I have the answers. Who will win? Who will lose? I answer these questions and more in this article.

If you watched the Golden Globes, you have a good idea about the potential winners and losers of the Oscars also known as the Academy Awards. The Golden Globes are a placeholder for the movie award season. Earning one is a big deal. Still, having earned one isn’t a necessary requirement for winning an Oscar.

In fact, A Star Is Born was snubbed at the Golden Globes. However, I predict the film will win an Academy Award. I feel Bradley Cooper deserves an Oscar. Plus, Lady Gaga is dominating headlines right now.

Let’s start the discussion with Best Picture. 2018 was a great year in movies. How do you go about selecting only one for the grand prize? Black Panther made the most money at the box office. Shouldn’t the number 1 film win the Best Picture?

Some say the box office numbers are just one component of the Oscars. I say numbers aren’t everything, but there is power in numbers. Sometimes movies are ahead of their time like Scarface. Bohemian Rhapsody is a worthy contender.
Vice doesn’t impress me at all. And I think The Favouriteis a classic script. With the popularity of Netflix on the rise, I boldly predict Roma will win an award, but not Best Picture. Best Picture belongs to Black Panther.

Next, I believe Spike Lee should win Best Director for BlackkKlansman. It is a controversial film based on a true story. The movie is about a black man joining the KKK. This is Spike Lee’s time. Moreover, Jordan Peele’s involvement as a producer should help the cause.

Best Actor should go either to Bradley Cooper or Rami Malek in my opinion. I’m ready to say Bradley Cooper wins outright. Right now, he has the upper hand at this point in the award season.

I believe Best Actress goes to Olivia Colman. Hollywood has a habit of following trends, and Olivia Colman is trending for better or worst. Best Supporting Actor should go to Mahershala Ali. He is a fantastic actor and Green Book is an outstanding movie. It would shock me if he doesn’t win.

The word on the street is that Regina King will win Best Supporting Actress for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. After many years of being absent from “film”, she rightfully earned her onscreen nomination.

Here’s where Netflix comes into play. I feel Best Original Screenplay should go to the brilliant Alfonso Cuaron. Roma is too good to ignore. Roma may also win Best Foreign-Language Film as well.

Moreover, Bradley Cooper and Eric Roth will likely win for Best Adapted Screenplay. A Star Is Born is beautifully written. It should earn multiple awards.
Finally, RBG just might win Best Documentary and Best Cinematography goes to Never Look Away.
In 33 days, you’ll know if my Oscars Predictions were on target. Maybe, you have your own predictions that you want to share. Chime in comments.

Friends from College Is the Perfect Netflix Original Comedy Binge

Friends from College season 1 starring Keegan-Michael Key is the perfect Netflix Original comedy binge. Each episode averages approximately 30 minutes in length and there is a total of eight in the series, right now. Soon, there will be more episodes because season 2 is expected to air on January 11, 2019.

You can reasonably finish your binge over the weekend. If you choose to binge-watch the show, I guarantee you’ll enjoy every minute. Friends from College is fun, light, dark, laid-back, and energetic when necessary.

I watched every episode and I’m fascinated by the script and character development. Admittedly, some things are predictable. The characters grow and the script flips. I feel there isn’t a better setting or a more perfect plot. Friends from College is about a group of college friends from Harvard who reunite in New York City.

Keegan-Michael Key is a novelist named Ethan, who’s married to a lawyer who hates her job. They don’t have any kids together. And Ethan is cheating on his wife with her best friend.

Plus, Ethan secretly has feelings for Marianne. That’s pure speculation on my part. Marianne is a friend from college who allows Ethan and his wife to live in her New York apartment rent-free.

Ethan is the character you love to hate. The comedy show is predictably all about Ethan. Fred Savage plays Ethan’s gay best friend and agent named Max. Max’s partner is a surgeon, who also graduated from Harvard. He openly hates Ethan, because he thinks Max has secret feelings for Ethan.

You see Keegan-Michael Key and Fred Savage are a dynamic duo. If Keegan-Michael Key’s Ethan is Batman, then Fred Savage’s Max is Robin.  Max is Ethan’s muse. They make up stories and write books.

The TV show debut on July 14, 2017. Friends from College season 2 returns after a year-long break next week. Clear your schedules next weekend, because the perfect binge is back.

Is Your Entertainment Better Off Now Than It Was Four Years Ago?

BY: GURU JAY

Are the music and movies of the 1960s and 1970s better than today’s music and movies? In other words, is your entertainment better off now than it was four years ago? I agree with Bob Seger, today’s music ain’t got the same soul (and I like that old school rock and roll, too.) But if I’m being honest, today’s sound doesn’t compare with yesterday’s sound. It’s simple as that. However, I can’t say the same about movies, because movies go beyond sounds and into visuals.

It is undeniable that visual effects play a large role in making a movie superior. Music is limited to only one sense and that’s hearing. Movies appeal to your sight and sound.

Autotune and audio engineering can’t make up for inferior vocals. To me, music is about the quality and the voice of Michael Jackson can’t be duplicated. You can try to clone him all you want, but there will never be another Michael Jackson.

While the music has digressed, movies have undoubtedly progressed; and that’s for several reasons. Today’s music videos are like mini-movies. Music draws on the ideas of the movie business. Hollywood is a place where dreams come true.

Who would have thought all these remakes were possible? TV shows that once existed, are here again. They’re repackaged and Netflix plays  a large role in making these products superior.
Sometimes, I can’t stand these Netflix Originals because there are so many of them. But I most admit most of them are damn good.

It is no fault of the artists, but the music can’t get any better. They don’t make stars like they used to. But, you’ll find the movies will keep getting better until there’s a technological explosion. What’s new in the entertainment industry? Do you believe there’s nothing new under the sun?

Why You Should Watch Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Why You Should Watch Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Have you seen Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee? After much deliberation I decided to watch the collection on Netflix.

At first, I was on the fence about watching the show. I didn’t know if it was worth my time. However, something told me to give it a chance.

I love to be entertained. Entertainment is a great influencer on the world. And comedy is the great equalizer.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee appeals to those who like comedy, cars, and coffee.

So, what’s it all about?

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is exactly what the name suggests. Comedians get in a car and get coffee. Moreover, they have fun, light, and laidback conversations on their way to drinking a cup of Joe together.

I’ve seen a ton of episodes and here is my take on the TV series. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is unique to television because unique comedians drive around in unique cars and have unique experiences.

Right now, I’m watching the last episodes because they are more relevant. Eventually, I will get around to watching the first episodes.

So far I’ve seen Ellen DeGeneres, Tracy Morgan, Dave Chappelle, Zach Galifianakis, Brian Regan, and Dana Carvey. This show is turning me into a believer.

I believe Jerry Seinfeld is a genius. I expect this show to last forever. Much of the show is filmed in Los Angeles.

Jerry Seinfeld does all the driving. Netflix does all the filming. The giant comedian teamed up with the giant Hollywood conglomerate. Who’s next…Starbucks?

Comedians themselves are interesting characters. They have awfully good stories to tell. Their lives are observed under a microscope.

Comedians are creative creatures. These lively entertainers do what doctors can’t do in some cases. In a world of so much uncertainty and heartache, comedy helps sooth the pain and heal the wounds. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is just what the world needs, and what the doctor ordered.

Luke Cage Is Back and Better Than Ever

BY: GURU JAY

Have you heard? Luke Cage is back and better than ever. Days ago, Netflix released season 2 of the hit Marvel series.

Check out Luke Cage! You won’t regret it. The show is the total package.

It has everything you want from action to romance. The first episode begins with an unforgettable fight scene. Plus, the ever so beautiful Rosario Dawson returns as Luke’s love interest.

I remember when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) had a recurring role on Jessica Jones. Mike was a major reason fans kept watching the TV show. I can’t imagine anybody else playing the lead character but Mike Colter. He made me want to be a bartender for a week.

Luke Cage sets the bar high. If you don’t know, he has super human strength and a bullet-proof body. He is the superhero from New York City everybody loves and loves to hate.

You see the crime fighter has made a few enemies along the way. In season 2, he tackles drug dealers from the start. He must overcome organized crime to get to the end game.

Expect season 2 to be exciting. From what I’ve seen so far, the acting is incredible. And the script is well-written.

Luke Cage goes by many names. One of those names is Power Man. The other is Carl Lucas.

Luke’s father, a preacher man, refuses to call him anything except his government name. His father gives a thrilling speech in the beginning of season 2 episode 1. His father strongly disapproves of Luke Cage’s way of life.

Still, Luke Cage is raising hell up in Harlem. He is kicking ass and taking names. Although he’s a good guy, he must worry about both sides of the law. Harlem’s hero is ready for a challenge. He may have to take on the devil. Watch Luke Cage and come see what all the fuss is about.
