Oscars Recap

BY: GURU JAY

February 29 is a rare day. It is my honor to write and publish on a Leap Year. I will choose my words carefully considering this special opportunity.
Last night, my family and I watched the Oscars while eating dinner and later on some corn for popping. Host Chris Rock took control of the stage right from the start. In the words of Kevin Hart on the red carpet, Rock addressed “the elephant in the room.” Many of Chris’s jokes crossed the line, but wasn’t this expected?
Early on the musical sounds of Sam Smith filled the room. Additionally, Brie Larson won Best Lead Actress for Room. But first, Alicia Vikander (Spotlight) earned it for Best Supporting Actress. However, that was after the Weeknd performed Earned It.
Do you spy a pattern? Mark Rylance won Best Supporting Actor for his Bridge of Spies performance. If you weren’t a fan of repetition, you might be furiously angry that Mad Max: Fury Road scored 6 Oscars. Comic Louis C.K. lightened up the mood with his Mad Max bit.

Marvel supermen Chadwick Boseman and Chris Evans announced Mad Max for back-to-back awards. Plus, Superman himself Henry Cavill presented alongside Scandal’s Kerry Washington.
On a serious note, Lady Gaga made a bold move with her song standing against sexual violence. Spotlight received the Best Picture. Once again, Alejandro Iñárritu earned Best Director for The Revenant. The Revenant was also awarded Best Cinematography.
I always enjoy watching the Red Carpet. Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan gave fantastic interviews. It almost felt like the SuperBowl.
Ex-Machina deservingly took home a statute. Ryan Gosling joked that he and Russell Crowe shared 2 Oscars between them. Oh, in case that wasn’t enough, Chris Rock raised $65,342 selling Girl Scout cookies for his daughters inside the Dolby Theatre.

Last but not least, Leonardo Dicaprio earned Best Lead Actor for The Revenant. I believe this was his moment. All of Hollywood was proud of Dicaprio as he stood tall on that stage and accepted this amazing achievement. The moral of the story is: always believe in your dreams. Given an opportunity, take a leap of faith.

Who’s Laughing with Chris Rock?

BY: GURU JAY

Could you use a good laugh? Watch Chris Rock’s movies, standups, and TV show reruns. For a while, Chris was Mr. HBO. Plus, Everybody Hates Chris was a major hit.
Chris Rock’s brand of comedy is still solid. He always talks about edgy topics. How many times must networks censor his standup material?
You can’t watch Chris Rock on Comedy Central’s TV network unedited. Thank God for freedom of speech. It is vital that comedians represent the whole truth of society.
Although the truth hurts, the pain helps you grow. Ask any tall man and he’ll tell you how hard it is on your knees, legs, and feet. It’s called growing pains for good reason.

Chris Rock grows on you. Like beer, you have to acquire a taste for his comedy. Sometimes, the comic’s jokes leave a bitter taste by design.
The celebrity doesn’t mind failing, and that’s why he’s successful. I admire how Chris has excelled despite being poor. What is more, he makes a handsome profit from his struggles, because he discusses poverty in memorable scenes and sketches.
Have you seen Head of State? If Bernie Mac is the King of Comedy, then Chris Rock is President-Elect. Who can deny his influence?
Plenty of comedians study his every movement. His younger brother/ comic Tony Rock respects his hustle. Indeed, Chris Rock is a certified hustler.

Case in point, CB4 and Pootie Tang came out of nowhere. Making something out of nothing is what this comedic actor does best. The Hollywood idol doesn’t need a giant studio or distributor to create exceptional content.
Like Martin Lawrence and Chris Tucker, Chris Rock is in full effect. Longevity in the comedy world is atypical. Overall, Chris Rock can’t complain too much about his lucrative career. Amazingly, he continues creating relevant content.

Who’s Watching Empire Season 2?

BY: GURU JAY

The second season of Empire is shattering records. Although the first two episodes started slowly, the third episode was incredible. And last night’s episode set the tone.
We’re learning more details about Lucious Lyon. The writers use flashbacks to allow viewers to piece together Lyon’s puzzling past. You gain a strong understanding of his complex relationships with family and music.
More TV shows should consider having limited commercial interruption like Empire. I believe producers have the viewers in mind. They’re obviously listening to constructive criticism too.

Synopsis
Where do I begin because there’s so much drama? Let’s see, Andre and his wife dig up Vernon in order to save his daddy’s ass. Now, the big-breasted prosecutor doesn’t have a case against Lucious because her snitch is dead.

Cookie and Hakeem started a new record label called Dynasty. And Hakeem is hell-bent on forming an all Latina music group. Unfortunately, his father buys every urban radio station and blackballs him from the air. On top of that, he signs Hakeem’s lead singer (Becky G) to Empire.

The frustrated Hakeem stabs Jamal’s giant Rolling Stone photo at their music video shooting. At one point the rapper grabs a baseball bat when attacking his brother. I guess the brothers are not gonna work it out.

On the sidebar, Chris Rock, Ludacris, Pitbull, NeYo and more celebrities make appearances.

Meanwhile, Cookie believes Lucious plans to destroy her startup company by hiring thugs to rob her office. Don’t fret because Cookie is packing heat. Now, her distrust of Lucious has reached a new high.
Jamal catches his boyfriend receiving a sex act from the Rolling Stone photographer. And Andre invites the Lyons to his baptism. Surprisingly, everyone including Lucious comes.

That’s only the half of it. The new trailer shows that Hakeem’s been kidnapped. You’ll have to wait until November 4th to see what happens. You can check out my previous Empire posts here: Who’s Watching Empire?, Who’s Watching Empire Part II?, Who’s Watching Empire Part III?
